Main Description

The quality of information about sustainable tourism development: A study of official websites of the Portuguese public tourism organisations

In the year declared as the International Year of Ecotourism planned by the UNEP and in which the Conference on Sustainable Development "Rio+10" will take place in South Africa how much the concept of sustainability has developed? Did the public organisations responsible for the tourism in Portugal adopt the whole concept of sustainability? In which ways did those organisations become effective to spread the message of sustainability through all the available means of information? Portugal was one of the countries that signed the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) Code of Ethics for Tourism, in 1999, which envisage the promotion of tourism sustainability. The spread of information concerning this issue is essential to make sure that all of the different stakeholders within the sector can lead their action in a responsible way. Though, this project tries to determine if the Portuguese tourism organisations really faced this challenge by promoting all the significant information on the sustainability subject. Therefore official websites of the public organisations were analysed in order to check if there was available information, considering various criteria. Considering the potential use of this means of universal communication - Internet - we concluded that the organisations failed in achieving a reasonable level of its use towards the promotion of the sustainable tourism information. In fact, we considered that these organisations should establish some guidelines to fill the gap concerning quality information in order to help all stakeholders to achieve the principles of sustainable tourism.
